Reminder: Protest outside Hamilton City Council on Thursday
Thursday the 27th of June, 11:00am to 12:30pm, in Garden Place outside the Council office building. Opposing rates increases, growing debt, and unwelcome roading changes.
There is a follow-up protest this week against the Hamilton City Council approving the Long-Term Plan. Encourage your councillors to vote against this Long-term Plan and remind them that their seats are on the line at the next full election.
In past elections, did those councillors openly campaign for huge rates increases, massive increases in debt levels, and running down core infrastructure?
Gather in the Civic Square part of Garden Place outside the Hamilton City Council building from 11am to 12:30pm on Thursday the 27th of June 2024.
If you oppose rates increases and the massive debt, encourage others to join the protest.
Earlier this month, the Hamilton City Council announced a minor reduction in the proposed rates increases. However, those in Hamilton can still expect their rates bills to effectively double by the end of 2030 under that revised Long-Term Plan proposal.
The City Council’s press release emphasised a plan to save $33 million in staff and consultant spending over the next 10 years, “deferring nearly $75 million that would go towards a new wastewater treatment plant”, and reversing some plans to cut various grants/sponsorships.
The protest is also about the traffic calming measures which are slowing traffic, increasing travel times across the city and making it difficult for emergency services to get to emergencies in a timely fashion. Installing traffic calming measures is also one of the ways Council is increasing the amount of debt.
Local groups will bring their signs and banners and they will have extras to borrow.
The petition to STOP HAMILTON CITY COUNCIL RATE INCREASES has gained over 1400 signatures and is still running. Spread the link with those who will be impacted.
